Temperature gradient

Difference in temperature between two faces or points in a material or structure. In glass, the difference between the face receiving the heat and the opposite side. Too steep a gradient can cause breaking due to thermal shock. In kiln structures, the temperature drop across individual layers of insulation or across a complete lining from hot face to shell.
